READ: THE HISTORY OF PATUXENT COMMONS
ABOUT PATUXENT COMMONS: Patuxent Commons is an intentional, supportive community for people of all ages, abilities and incomes planned for Columbia, MD. The concept was developed by the Autism Society of Maryland (AUSOM) to help address the housing needs of adults with disabilities. At Patuxent Commons, residents of all abilities will be welcomed and encouraged to be good, engaged neighbors. Mission First Housing Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit developer, is overseeing construction of the 76-unit apartment project that will feature a mixed income development with 25% of the units set-aside to serve individuals with disabilities. The balance of the units will be targeted to seniors, individuals and families. Approximate 70% of the units will be affordable with 25% of the units set aside for people with disabilities. This ideal location, close to transit, shopping, recreation and job opportunities, will facilitate integration of residents with disabilities into the surrounding community and promote their ability to live as independently as possible.
*Please note that an application process for Patuxent Commons is being developed. There is no application or waiting list at this time. Watch this space or subscribe to our newsletter to receive information once a process is established.

Images of Patuxent Commons! – Fall 2020
We’re delighted to share these exciting images of the Patuxent Commons community!
AUSOM has led the effort to develop Patuxent Commons as a partial solution to the housing crisis facing adults with autism and other disabilities in Howard County.
Our members have provided crucial seed funding and the input needed to bring this initiative forward from a promising idea to a viable concept. After a competitive selection process, Mission First Housing Group was selected to serve as the project’s developer. Earlier this year, Mission First secured an outstanding, transit-accessible location for the project in the Hickory Ridge neighborhood.
These preliminary images were designed by Moseley Architects, who’ve been working with us on this effort for the last three years. Click here for a fact sheet with all the details about Patuxent Commons.
This is an exciting stage in Patuxent Commons’ development but much work remains to be done. We have an important public meeting scheduled next week on Thursday, November 5, that we hope you’ll attend. Click for more information and access to the meeting link.
Patuxent Commons
The demand for affordable housing options for adults with autism and other disabilities in Howard County is rapidly growing. The AUSOM Housing Committee has spent more than two years researching supportive housing models from across the country that could be adapted to address this pressing need. This process led AUSOM to identify the intentional, intergenerational community model as an approach that could bring inclusive, affordable housing to Howard County. The model has been used successfully to support child welfare-involved populations in award-winning communities such as Bridge Meadows in Portland, Oregon, where it’s demonstrated effectiveness in increasing housing stability and reducing social isolation.
