Understanding Autism: Key Considerations for Crisis Response

Our Monthly Speaker Series Returns in October with Speaker Lt. William Cheuvront of the Howard County Police Department. Lt. Cheuvront will share with how he works with new recruits to the department to provide information and training on how to work with the local autism community. The purpose of this training is to identify:
-The key characteristics of autism and the vulnerabilities commonly associated with autism
-The impact of these key considerations and vulnerabilities in a crisis situation
– Communication and de-escalation techniques to effectively and safely interact with people with autism during a crisis

About Lt. William Cheuvront: Lt. Cheuvront has over 28 years of law enforcement experience. He currently serves as the commander of the Operations Suport Division for the Howard County Police Department. He is a member of the C.I.T. leadership team and is an instructor for Autism Awareness and Introduction to IDD for C.I.T. and recruit classes. Lt. Cheuvront served as a board member for the Autism Society of Maryland. He is a past supervisor of Project Lifesaver and Rapid Return Program and helped create the 911 Flagging Program in partnership with HCAS.
