DESCRIPTION:Megan Rusciano of Disability Rights Maryland will present on guardianship and how supported decision-making can serve as an alternative or allow adults with disabilities more decision-making autonomy under guardianship. Supported decision-making \nCLICK TO REGISTER \n\nis a nationally- and internationally-recognized best practice that preserves the civil rights of people with disabilities by promoting a person’s right to self-determination\nrecognizes that everyone\, regardless of whether they have a disability\, relies on the support of people they know and trust to make and communicate their own decisions\ncan be used to prevent\, limit and/or terminate restrictions on personal autonomy and decision-making imposed by guardianship\nis protected by a Maryland law that went into effect on October 1\, 2022\n\nSe proporciona traducción simultánea al español​​​​​​​ \nMegan Rusciano (she/her/hers) is the Managing Attorney of the Developmental Disabilities\, Health Care\, and Victims of Crime Act Team at Disability Rights Maryland (DRM)\, Maryland’s federally-designated Protection & Advocacy Agency for people with disabilities. She founded and chairs Maryland’s Cross-Disability Supported Decision-Making Coalition\, is a consultant on the Judiciary’s Guardianship and Vulnerable Adult Workgroup\, faculty for the Judiciary’s training for Court-Appointed Attorneys in guardianship proceedings\, and was selected to participate in a group tasked with updating Maryland rule of professional conduct for attorneys who represent clients with diminished capacity. Prior to joining DRM in 2017\, Ms. Rusciano was a Client Advocate at The Arc of Northern Virginia. She received Juris Doctors from American University Washington College of Law and University of Ottawa\, and a Bachelors of Arts from McGill University.

This program is offered to: \n\nLicensed drivers with a developmental disability\nDrivers with a learner’s permit with a developmental disability\nPassengers with a developmental disability that might be anxious about traffic stops\n\nParticipants will receive: \n\n$20 gas gift card\nA printed copy of “PFA Tips: What to Do During a Traffic Stop”\nAn envelope which can be used to hold the person’s registration card\, insurance card\, disclosure card\, and a copy of the PFA Tips article with tips about autism for the officer on the back side\nA laminated card (with clips) to attach to the driver’s visor with the top five instructions of what the driver needs to remember to do during the traffic stop\nAn Autism or Intellectual Disability disclosure card\n\nVisit the registration page for more details/resources and to reserve a time slot. DESCRIPTION:Parents and guardians of HCPSS students with IEPs and IFSPs will have the opportunity to select from a variety of workshops during each session. Engage in discussions\, ask questions and learn how to use tools to support your student’s success and reduce stress. There will also be workshops about advocating for your child and becoming an active and informed member of the IEP team. This event is for seasoned parents/guardians and those new to special education process. Online registration is required by Monday\, October 3. Each registrant will receive an email by Tuesday\, October 4\, with a description of the workshops\, including the time and virtual meeting links. Please email FSRC@hcpss.org with any questions. She is a member of the Autism Society of America’s board of directors\, and chairs its Council of Autistic Advisors. Carly volunteers her time for multiple Autism nonprofits\, helping women connect with Autism resources and improving employment outcomes for Autistic people.
