They will share what they benefited from most\, what they wished their parents had done differently\, and what challenges they may have faced due to delayed diagnosis or “masking.” This is a must attend for every parent! \nThe facilitator\, Carly Ott\, is an Autistic self-advocate\, mother\, and VP at a Fortune Top 50 company. She is a member of the Autism Society of America’s board of directors\, and chairs its Council of Autistic Advisors. Carly volunteers her time for multiple Autism nonprofits\, helping women connect with Autism resources and improving employment outcomes for Autistic people. He will discuss early risk factors in the identification of mental health challenges (like depression and anxiety) in children with autism. Attendees will also leave the presentation with practical tools that optimize mental health for all children. The talk will also discuss the diverse roles of occupational therapists in supporting the mental health of adolescents on the autism spectrum. SUMMARY:HCPSS Parent Empowerment Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Howard County Public School System’s Department of Special Education invites parents\, guardians and all caregivers to participate in the virtual 2nd annual Parent Empowerment Conference September 29-October 1. Two sessions will be offered each night\, at 6:30-7:30 p.m. and 7:45-8:45 p.m. Conference registrants may choose to participate in as many sessions as they wish. \nSessions will be led by HCPSS Special Education staff and community partner organizations on topics related to supporting your child and participating in the IEP process during virtual learning. Participants will have opportunities to engage in discussions\, ask questions and learn how to use tools to support success and reduce stress during virtual learning. Both seasoned parents/guardians and those new to special education will learn how to advocate for their children and be active and informed members of the IEP team. \nThe conference is free and open to anyone interested. Online registration is required no later than 5 p.m. on Monday\, September 28. Each registrant will receive an email providing a description of all sessions\, including the date\, time and Google Meet links. Participants are encouraged to connect to each session early\, as the space available is limited to 250 people per session. A powerpoint presentation for each session will be posted on the HCPSS Special Education website following the conference sessions. \nPlease email FSRC@hcpss.org with any questions or for assistance. \n
